If you recently moved to Georgia in the Atlanta area, you will need to find out a few things in an effort to get your household up and running such as the Atlanta power companies that are available. If you search the internet you will find that a lot of counties in Georgia have municipal utilities that are run by the city. In the state of Georgia there are three different kinds of electric power providers. There are those that are investor owned, those that are government owned and those that are electric cooperatives. Georgia Power Company, Georgia’s Electric Membership Cooperatives, Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Savannah Electric and Power Company are all governed by the Georgia Territorial Electric Service Act.
However if you are searching for Atlanta power companies, the one electric power company designated to serve the Atlanta metropolitan residential area is Georgia Power. This came about because of the Georgia Territorial Electric Service Act. This Act took the map of Georgia and then awarded different areas of Georgia to different electric power suppliers. There is a small portion of the map that is not designated as being designated to be served by one specific supplier however, this area is very small. This is only true for residential electrical customers or new commercial businesses. If you are a bigger commercial customer that existed prior to the Georgia Territorial Electric Service Act and use more than a 900 Kilowatt load, you still have a choice of electric power providers and are not limited to the Atlanta power companies assigned to the metropolitan area of Atlanta. You can even take bids from an electrical power company other than the Atlanta power companies or the companies that usually operate within your area if you are a 900 kilowatt or better commercial customer.
The Georgia Public Service Commission is charged with electricity regulation throughout the state of Georgia. This commission has the power to determine what the rates are for investor owned utilities like Georgia Power, which is the only investor owned electric company in Georgia, and whether or not these rates are fair and reasonable. This commission also makes sure that the power company assigned to each area is able to carry the electrical demand of its consumers.
Because there is no choice when you are searching for Atlanta power companies, you already know that you are going to be provided electricity by the designated supplier. This doesn’t allow for much competition at the residential level but it still allows Atlanta businesses, commercial businesses and industries to opt for the electric power provider that most fits their needs and budget among the Atlanta power companies. Of course this option is only provided to you if you are a commercial business, business or industry that uses more than 900 kilowatts of power per month. Businesses that use smaller amounts of electricity such as small restaurants, grocery stores and any business that falls below the 900 kilowatts of usage per month do not receive this option.
