Natural Gas Providers Georgia

Georgia residents can choose from a variety of natural gas providers including MXenergy which acquired Gaskey. in GA. As an unregulated state, Georgia provides the opportunity for natural gas customers to purchase gas from one of three types of providers, depending on location: an investor-owned local distribution company, a natural gas marketer or a municipal gas system.

In Georgia there are 84 municipal gas systems that provide natural gas to residents. Prices for municipal gas service are exempt from Georgia Public Service Commission regulation. The only local distribution company in Georgia is Atmos Energy Corporation. It is fully regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission. In 1998, Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) became a pipes-only gas company when it opened its service area to competition in accordance to the Natural Gas Competition and Deregulation Act of 1997. Customers on the AGLC system are served by ten certified natural gas marketers. Prices charged by natural gas marketers are market based. The Georgia Public Service Commission regulates AGLC’s distribution services.

The “Natural Gas Consumers’ Relief Act” (HB 1568) of 1997 provides for a bill of rights for natural gas consumers in Georgia. Customer are entitled to reliable, safe and affordable natural gas service which includes high-quality customer service, impartial, accurate and understandable information in a written form that allows for comparison of prices and terms of service. Natural gas providers in Georgia are required to fairly apply provisions for deposit and credit requirements, service denials and terminations, and deferred payments. Customers of any of the natural gas providers are protected from unfair, deceptive, fraudulent and anti-competitive practices. The customer bill of rights requires natural gas marketers in Georgia to provide accurate and timely billing and provide protection from improper use of their customer records and payment histories. Customers must also be provided with a fair and efficient process of resolving differences with marketers.

Customers who are low-income or who are unable to get service from other natural gas marketers may receive service from SCANA as approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission. The commission provides information on signing up for the service, eligibility requirements and background information on the Regulated Provider. Customers seeking service from the regulated natural gas provider as a low-income consumer must qualify through the Department of Human Resources (DHR) under the LIHEAP program, a federally funded program administered by DHR to assist low income households in meeting their heating and cooling needs. To qualify under LIHEAP, a consumer must have an income at or below 150% of the poverty level in Georgia, assume responsibility for paying the cost for the home’s primary heating source, and be a United States citizen or legally admitted alien.

Deregulation of natural gas providers in Georgia has increased consumer choices, particularly in selecting a certified marketer. When selecting a marketer, consumers should have clear expectations ranging from good customer service to the lowest price. Once customers have compiled a list of expectations from their natural gas provider, prioritize them according to importance and select the marketer that is best able to meet those expectations.
