MXenergy is a retail supplier of natural gas and electricity, serving 15 deregulated territories in the United States and two in Canada. The company headquartered in Stamford, CT was founded in 1999 by Jeffrey Mayer who currently serves as the company’s Chief Executive Officer and President, Robi Artman-Hodge who served as the company’s first Chief Financial Officer and as Executive Vice President until 2010, and Daniel Burke, MXenergy company’s first Chief Operating Officer. Over its 11-year history MXenergy has undergone significant growth and change with the dynamic energy market
The first headquarters for this company was established in Louisville, KY. In 2000 the Stamford, CT office was opened to house executive management, finance and accounting. That year MXenergy purchased supply contracts for 20,000 customers from Keyspan Energy which provides electric and gas service in the New York Metropolitan area, upstate New York, and parts of New England. The following year MXenergy relocated its operational hub from Louisville, KY to Annapolis Junction, MD. This location currently serves as the company’s principal call center.
Adding another chapter to its company history, This company purchased books of business from Louisville-based Summit Energy and Energy.com in 2001. By 2002 the company began serving consumers behind Consumer Gas in Michigan and the Northern Indiana Public Service Commission. Rapidly increasing its customer base, MXenergy completed an asset purchase agreement with NICOR Gas in Indiana and Ohio in 2003. That same year the company began servicing customers in New Jersey as part of its retail network.
MXenergy entered the Canadian market in 2004 behind the Enbridge Natural Gas System in Ontario. 2004 was an important year in the company’s history as it initiated its electricity supply business and purchased Total Gas & Electric, a subsidiary of Star Petro. Growth continued over the next several years as MXenergy continued to acquire customers and expand into new regions. In 2005 MXenergy expanded its New York State service by entering the Rochester Gas & Electric market and acquired Shell Energy Service Company the next year, moving principle operations to Houston, TX.
MXenergy reached a major milestone in 2006 by being named in Inc. Magazine’s list of fasting growing private companies in America. That year MXenergy was ranked fourth on the list based on revenue growth and 370th on the basis of growth rate.
Growth continued through the end of the decade for the company. In 2007 customer contracts were purchased from Vantage Power Services. MXenergy also began servicing customers of United Illuminating and Connecticut Light & Power that year. The company penetrated the Georgia market in 2008 by acquiring Gaskey, one of the state’s major suppliers.
Pennsylvania became MXenergy’s newest market in 2010. The company began providing service to PPL, formerly known as Pennsylvania Power & Light, and PECO, formerly known as Philadelphia Electric Company. This year they also began service to customers of Pacific Gas & Electric.
Mxenergy’s history of acquisition and service has grown its territory to include natural gas and/or electricity service to the states of Georgia, Texas, Ohio, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland and California, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and British Columbia.
Natural gas is one of the most unpredictable commodities traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). National market prices fluctuate, up and down, depending on several factors such as unusually hot weather and competing fuel costs. And, because natural gas is clean, efficient, and reliable, it has become increasingly popular for use in homes, businesses, and electric power-generation. All of these factors have contributed to the increase in natural gas prices.
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath significantly disrupted natural gas production capability off the shores of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The storm impacted hundreds of offshore wells, dozens of onshore processing facilities, and miles of pipeline. As the industry rebuilds itself in the region, short term spikes in the price of natural gas are likely, resulting from the more limited supplies that are available to meet the remaining demand. It remains to be seen whether any long lasting effects may surface.

Georgia residents can choose from a variety of natural gas providers including MXenergy which acquired Gaskey. in GA. As an unregulated state, Georgia provides the opportunity for natural gas customers to purchase gas from one of three types of providers, depending on location: an investor-owned local distribution company, a natural gas marketer or a municipal gas system.
In Georgia there are 84 municipal gas systems that provide natural gas to residents. Prices for municipal gas service are exempt from Georgia Public Service Commission regulation. The only local distribution company in Georgia is Atmos Energy Corporation. It is fully regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission. In 1998, Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) became a pipes-only gas company when it opened its service area to competition in accordance to the Natural Gas Competition and Deregulation Act of 1997. Customers on the AGLC system are served by ten certified natural gas marketers. Prices charged by natural gas marketers are market based. The Georgia Public Service Commission regulates AGLC’s distribution services.
The “Natural Gas Consumers’ Relief Act” (HB 1568) of 1997 provides for a bill of rights for natural gas consumers in Georgia. Customer are entitled to reliable, safe and affordable natural gas service which includes high-quality customer service, impartial, accurate and understandable information in a written form that allows for comparison of prices and terms of service. Natural gas providers in Georgia are required to fairly apply provisions for deposit and credit requirements, service denials and terminations, and deferred payments. Customers of any of the natural gas providers are protected from unfair, deceptive, fraudulent and anti-competitive practices. The customer bill of rights requires natural gas marketers in Georgia to provide accurate and timely billing and provide protection from improper use of their customer records and payment histories. Customers must also be provided with a fair and efficient process of resolving differences with marketers.
Customers who are low-income or who are unable to get service from other natural gas marketers may receive service from SCANA as approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission. The commission provides information on signing up for the service, eligibility requirements and background information on the Regulated Provider. Customers seeking service from the regulated natural gas provider as a low-income consumer must qualify through the Department of Human Resources (DHR) under the LIHEAP program, a federally funded program administered by DHR to assist low income households in meeting their heating and cooling needs. To qualify under LIHEAP, a consumer must have an income at or below 150% of the poverty level in Georgia, assume responsibility for paying the cost for the home’s primary heating source, and be a United States citizen or legally admitted alien.
Deregulation of natural gas providers in Georgia has increased consumer choices, particularly in selecting a certified marketer. When selecting a marketer, consumers should have clear expectations ranging from good customer service to the lowest price. Once customers have compiled a list of expectations from their natural gas provider, prioritize them according to importance and select the marketer that is best able to meet those expectations.
